Since the 1980s, art education in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing gradually switched from socialist realism to a more “liberal cannon” where Greek, Roman, and Renaissance sculptures were adopted as pedagogical tools. As a result, long before knowing the historical and cultural contexts from which these sculptures emerged, Chinese art students have been sketching Michelangelo’s David. For this project I collaborated in the with Lu, a dancer from Beijing trained both in modern dance as well as in the system of qi-energy flows which is the back bone of traditional Chinese medicine treatments and the main reason why the image of the body is absent in the history of visual culture in the China. For the work I asked her to appropriate the sculptural poses. The work is filmed in the museum-like drawing space of the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing.
